Căpriana Monastery
Căpriana Monastery is one of the oldest monastic settlements in the Republic of Moldova. Legend tells that it was founded by the great voivode of Moldova, Stephen the Great. Archaeological research, however, together with several documents, come to confirm the fact that the age of the monastery is even older than that attributed by legend. Namely, it would have been founded in the first quarter of the XV century, during the reign of Alexander the Good, the grandfather of Stephen the Great.
The monastic complex includes several buildings: the Church of the Assumption built in 1545 by Petru Rareş and then rebuilt by Gavriil Bănulescu Bodoni in 1802, the winter chapel of the “Holy Great Martyr George” built in 1818 and the Central Church built between 1903 and 1905, as well with the Holy Great Martyr George as the patron.
Like most Moldovan monasteries, Căpriana is built in an extremely picturesque place. The location, the antiquity of the Monastery, its importance and the long list of voivodes - founders who contributed to its arrangement, are just a few reasons why it is worth visiting.
